10 Things You Probably Didn’t Know About CO2 Powered Inflation Products, by Marty Mares and Dejay Birtch

If you’ve been to your local bicycle shop or on a group ride in the past few years, chances are you’ve seen or used a CO2 inflator.

Everyone knows that CO2 powered inflation is faster than manual hand pumping, but here is a list of 10 things many people don’t know:

1)      CO2 is Carbon Dioxide, a pure and natural gas that is a major component of the Earth’s atmosphere. The CO2 inside Genuine Innovations cartridges is captured directly from a naturally occurring volcanic well in Europe. CO2is the gas used to make soft drinks. Each CO2cartridge contains about the same amout of gas as a 1-liter bottle of your favorite soda pop.

2)      CO2 is safe and has been used for years in soda siphons, life jackets, pellet guns, and a variety of other applications. CO2 is not a flammable gas. If heated up to over 120f the pressure goes up dramatically so leaving one on your dashboard in the middle of summer is not the best idea.

3)      CO2 canisters are steel and can be recyclable. CO2 cylinders contain less metal than a can of tuna and they can be recycled along with other steel products. Just like energy gel and power bar wrappers, CO2 cartridges should never end up on the trail or road side.

4)      Of the many CO2cartridge sizes available, 16 gram cylinders are the best size for bicycles because they fill a road bike tire or mountain bike tire to rideable pressure. For mountain bikes, one 16 gram cartridge will fill a 26X2.0 to 40psi. For road bikes, one 16 gram cartridge will fill a 700X23c to 130psi.

5)      The shelf life of CO2 is virtually indefinite, so unless your bike has cob webs in the spokes, your CO2 supply is good to go.

6)      Believe it or not, there is a quality difference between cheap CO2 sold in mass retail stores, and the quality CO2 refill cartridges found in your local bicycle shop. If you’re using CO2 cartridges to power your bb gun, no problem. Most department store CO2 cartridges contain oil inside of them.  However a quality CO2 inflator purchased at your local bicycle will run cleaner.

7)      If you’re a mountain bike racer on a budget, there are alternatives to CO2.

Next time you’re flipping through the pages of your favorite magazine, look close at the race photos and you’ll notice that attached to the seat post of most professional mountain bike racers is a product called Big Air. Although it fills tires fast like CO2 Big Air is made using inexpensive propane. Yes, propane is flammable, but just like a can of hair spray, as long as consumers use common sense with the product, there is no danger. In other words, don’t leave Big Air on the dash board of your car in the middle of the summer. Or use it near a flame. Propane is used as a propellant in many household aerosols like shaving cream and bath soap.

8)      CO2 is controllable if used with the proper device. Although there are still some cheap CO2 inflators being produced oversees, brands such as Genuine Innovations produce Made in USA CO2 inflators with the ability to control the flow of CO2 gas into your tire. Unless you opt for a super cheap and cheesy inflator, gone are the days when inflation devices dump CO2 into your tire without control.

9)      What happens if I run out of CO2? – In addition to inflation control, modern CO2 inflation devices have more cool features than ever before. Among the most recent innovations back up hand pumps or “Hybrid” inflators are state of the art CO2 pumps with the security of a mini pump built in. So even if you’re having one of those bad 5 flat tire days, a hybrid inflator will insure that you have air supply if you run out of CO2 cartridges.

10)   Can I travel on an airplane with CO2?  Unfortunately the answer to this question is no, but it’s not because CO2is dangerous. If your hobby is scuba, airlines will allow you check CO2 canisters with your bouncy vest. So why I this rule different for cyclists?  It makes no sense, but neither does the fact that a golfer can check a huge bag of clubs for free, but if you pack your Santa Cruz Blur in a bike case they hit you up for $100.00! If enough cyclists speak up, maybe the airlines will change their rules a bit. Until then, just pack an old fashioned hand pump in your case and hope you don’t get a flat tire.

There are 2 types of ATV riders out there. Those that have had a flat tire, and those that are going to get one. I am definitely in the first category, and I learned early on that I need to be prepared for flats. That meant carrying a compressor, a tire repair kit, plugs, and rubber cement. You can buy small, cheap air compressors easily enough, but I usually average a year or less out of one before something breaks or it just quits pumping. There is another alternative to the “Wal-Mart” compressor. It is a little gadget you can almost conceal in a closed fist that is powered by CO2 cartridges.

Genuine Inventions ATV Tire Inflator Kit:

Contents:

  1. The inflator.
  2. 16OZ  C02 cartridges (3).
  3. A puncture reamer/preparer.
  4. A quality T-handle plug insertion tool.
  5. Brown sticky string-type plugs (5).
  6. Various size inner-tube patches.
  7. Rubber cement
  8. Instruction guide.
  9. Zippered carry pouch to keep it all together.
The kit combines all of the necessities required to repair a flat tire. Just buy the kit, stow it and go. You don’t have to shop around for a compressor, then buy plugs and insertion tool and reamer…. It’s all together in a neat package. For my personal usage, I also added to this kit a spare valve stem, valve stem core and cap, but I have been told that I worry too much!

The obvious advantage inflator is the size. The whole kit is a fraction of the size of my old compressor, and I have done away with my old repair kit as well. Another pain that I experienced with compressors was dealing with the power cord. Sometimes you have to move a quad around with a 12V accessory plug to access the flat tire, then you have to clean and wrap up the power cord after you are done.

Another downfall of the small compressors, is the CFM, or rather the lack of it. It takes a long time to fill a tire, but more importantly, if you need to air a tire and the bead has broken off the rim, it is almost impossible with a small slow compressor. This C02 inflator will dump the majority of a cartridge’s contents in a couple of seconds. I have not had the “opportunity” to re-seat a tire bead with the inflator as of yet, but there is no doubt in my mind that the quick flow of the C02 inflator will surely be better than the slow trickle of a small compressor.

Field Test:

The inflator worked great with the manufacturers 16 gram cartridges. For my front tire, It took 2 cartridges to inflate the 25x8x12 to right at 6 psi. For the rear, 2 cartridges easily filled the 25x10x12 to 4.5 psi and there was some left in the cartridge. That’s another cool feature of the inflator; it is truly a trigger operated design. This allows you to save a partial cartridge. That’s handy if you have a slow leak, you can add a little without wasting the whole cartridge. Other inflators that I have seen make you use the whole charge at once. Here is a chart that shows what inflation yield you can expect with different tires and cartridges.

The inflator works best when it stands upright and vertical when inserted on the valve stem. This allows the liquid CO2 to off-gas without freezing up, which translates to higher pressures in the tire.

The manufacturer did not cut corners in the kit. Little things like using a T-handle on the plug insertion tool make a difference, especially when it comes time to patch a radial. Also, the plugs that they include are the high quality brown type. I have had better luck with these than the black plugs.

Pros:

Size and weight. Everything fits into a small, zippered carry bag.
Convenience. No need to assemble a kit – contains everything you need to fix a flat.
Fast flow rate. Inflate a tire in a few seconds. May allow you to re-seat a bead on the trail.

Cons:

The use of standard 12g cartridges will void the warranty.

Bottom Line

Convenient kit includes quality inflator, plugs, patches and all the tools you need.

Much faster, smaller and lighter than a compressor.

This kit is highly recommended for all quads.
